The T-Mobile class action settlement, related to the 2021 data breach, received final court approval in June 2023. However, due to ongoing appeals and legal complications, the distribution of settlement funds has been delayed. Eligible class members who submitted valid claims are still waiting for their compensation.

Current Status of the Settlement

In July 2024, the federal court called for a district opinion on the appeals, further halting the settlement process. By October 2024, the settlement administrator sent notices to class members with deficiencies in their claims, allowing them to respond or appeal by November 21, 2024. These appeals must be resolved before any funds can be distributed, which could take months.

As of now, the court has not scheduled a hearing to address these appeals, making it likely that payments will begin in mid-2025 if the issues are resolved on time. This delay has understandably been frustrating for claimants, but updates will continue to be posted on the official settlement website.

Background on the T-Mobile Settlement

The 2021 data breach at T-Mobile exposed the personal information of over 76 million customers, including addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, and financial details. The breach sparked outrage and prompted lawsuits alleging T-Mobile failed to secure its customers’ data. While T-Mobile denies any wrongdoing, it agreed to settle the claims with a $350 million fund.

Who Is Eligible for Compensation?

To qualify for compensation, individuals must meet the following conditions:

You were part of the group affected by the 2021 breach.
You received a notice of settlement eligibility.
You submitted a valid claim form by January 23, 2023.
Certain groups are excluded, including T-Mobile employees, judges and their families, and those who opted out of the settlement.

How Will Payments Be Distributed?

The $350 million settlement fund will first cover administrative costs, legal fees, and service awards for class representatives. After these expenses, the remaining funds will be distributed to eligible claimants in three categories:

Out-of-Pocket Loss Reimbursement – Compensation of up to $25,000 for documented expenses incurred due to the breach.
Loss of Time Reimbursement – Payment of $25 per hour for up to 15 hours spent addressing breach-related issues.
Alternative Cash Payment – A cash payout of $25 to $100, depending on the claimant’s state of residence.
Additionally, T-Mobile is offering two years of free identity theft protection services, including monthly credit monitoring, dark web surveillance, and fraud alerts.

Payment Methods

Claimants will receive compensation through their selected payment method, which may include:

PayPal
ACH transfer
Zelle
Venmo

If your payment details have changed, notify the settlement administrator immediately to avoid delays.

Expected Payout Date

Due to the pending appeals, class members should not expect payments until the first quarter of 2025 at the earliest. The settlement website will provide updates, so keep an eye on it to stay informed about any changes.
