In 2024, Verizon Wireless reached a $100 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit accused the company of misleading advertising practices, particularly by failing to disclose additional fees like administrative charges. As a result, the actual cost of Verizon’s plans turned out to be higher than what customers were initially led to believe.
The lawsuit argued that by not revealing these extra fees upfront, Verizon made its plans appear more affordable than they actually were, ultimately misleading customers into selecting costlier options than expected. This was deemed deceptive advertising, as the advertised prices didn’t include the total amount customers would have to pay. The case likely involved consumer protection laws and regulations such as the Federal Trade Commission Act, which prohibits deceptive practices in advertising.
Verizon Class Action Settlement Breakdown
As part of the settlement, Verizon will distribute $100 million to eligible customers who were charged these extra administrative fees. Here’s how the compensation will be allocated:
Base Payment: Every valid claim will receive a one-time payment of $15.
Monthly Service Bonus: Eligible customers will also get $1 for each month they were charged the administrative fee, up to a maximum of $85.
The total payout for each customer will be capped at $100, and the actual amount depends on the number of valid claims and how long the administrative fees were charged.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for this settlement, customers must have had a postpaid wireless or data plan with Verizon between January 1, 2016, and November 8, 2023. During this period, they must have been charged the contested administrative or telecom recovery fees.
Payout Dates for Verizon Class Action Settlement
Once the settlement is officially approved, payments will be issued to eligible claimants via check or electronic transfer.
If any settlement checks are uncashed or undeliverable, the funds will be classified as unclaimed property and returned to the respective class members, in accordance with state unclaimed property laws. Any associated administrative costs will be deducted proportionally from these unclaimed funds.
